Stew Leonard's Review

Stew Leonard's Awesome Fruit Basket won big points for the uniquely woven basket it came in and the three varieties of quality cheese, especially for the price. This is actually the largest basket Stew's sells and it is $20 cheaper than most of the other baskets we have reviewed. There are a couple of tacky things like hard candy and coffee in a silly package, but Stew Leonard's isn't trying to be Dean and Deluca - the box it came in was printed with a cow pattern. This is a fun basket but not one we'd recommend as a serious corporate gift; unless the recipient is kind of campy, a farmer or group of children.

FRUIT

 

Nine Apples - Four Red Delicious, two Granny Smith and three Fuji apples. Although we have had more bad Red Delicious apples than good ones, the ones in Stew Leonard's basket made the good list. The Grannies were a little bruised but the Fuji apples wer not. All of them had that waxy shiny coat you see at grocery stores and the quality is roughly the same.

Four Navel Oranges and Two Ruby Red Grapefruit - Peeling away the thick skin of the navel orange revealed what we thought it would - a seedless, somewhat middle of the road quality orange. It wasn't bad per se but when you receive fruit fresh from the tree you start to notice a difference from companies that ship it. The Ruby Red grapefruit had a nicely colored skin, kind of a creamy peach color. The flesh was juicy and drippy but definitely benefitted from a sprinkling of honey or sugar, as it was a little on the bitter side.

Two Bosc Pears - In our opinion Bosc pears are the coolest-looking but blandest-tasting pears on the mainstream market. Isn't that always the case though? Stew Leonard's included two beautiful-yet-kinda-blah Bosc pears.

Props for Exotic Fruit - The mango was good inside and out. Its lime green and gold skin was blushed with a deep red color and the golden-orange flesh  was easy to cut and enjoy. It was actually a pretty perfect mango - considering we know they didn't grow it themselves on their Southern Connecticut farm. The kiwi were very good too. Sweet and tangy and luckily no major bruises or blemishes.

SWEET GOURMET

 

Chocolate Otions - We actually ordered two baskets from Stew Leonard's at two different times and one basket had the chocolate covered fruit that shows up in so many baskets (the waxy kind we aren't very fond of). The second basket had chocolate and caramel covered peanut clusters, albeit, only three were in the package but better quality than the covered fruit. The Pirouline were good and are the same brand that most grocery stores sell. They are those crispy straws filled with a chocolatey frosting you can stick in a bowl of ice cream or eat plain.

Not a Fan - Stews included a bag of very mundane mixed hard candy. This is the stuff Grandma pours in a candy bowl to be forever forgotten, until her hopeful grandchildren eat them out of desperation for something sweeter than the brussel sprouts she made for dinner.

SAVORY GOURMET

 

Say Cheese - Say it three times - Vermont cheddar cheese, Brie cheese and Gouda cheese. Stew Leonard's won us over with their three types of REAL cheese, not the "pasteurized cheese food" products we keep seeing in baskets. The cheese were all tasty and fancier than what most other fruit basket companies send out in their baskets. The Monet Water Crackers, however, are like what "everyone else is doing". We aren't sure if Stew Leonard's includes them because of peer pressure or price but the Monet Water Crackers are just so-so.

Perky and Nutty - Stew Leonard's included coffee in their basket - in fact, the only basket that had coffee. Sadly, the packaging felt more like what you'd find free in the Motel 6 but honestly their logo is a green child-like man in a cowboy hat milking a smiling orange cow. It gives a very kidsy feel - who knows, this may be perfect for who you are thinking of sending it to. The mixed nuts were very good, but the packaging didn't really match the quality of the nuts.

Stew Leonard's Fruit Baskets History and Overview

Stew Leonards retail store started out as a concept of the owner's dairy farm roots.  Stew worked for his father, Charles Leonard in the dairy that he started in the 1920s, located in Norwalk, CT. The diary introduced pasteurizing and bottling milk to the area.  The plant would deliver the milk in bottles fresh to the doorsteps of customers. They appealed to the children by equipping the trucks with plastic cows that mooed. When the children heard the mooing cow milk truck, they knew that it was delivery time in the neighborhood.

Stew saw that the milk truck delivery service was dying in the late 60s, but he wanted to expand upon the concept of farm fresh goodness, while keeping children entertained, and informed about fresh foods and milk.  Stew's diary farm and milk delivery background are what drove him to the decision to start a dairy story of his own.  Stew envisioned creating a store where people could buy the freshest items, and where children could see the actual process of where the fresh farm food came from.  He started his first retail store in 1969, and he started with an inventory of only eight items.  However, since he focused on making these key items high quality and fresh, people continued to support the business, and the business grew.  Over the years, as the store grew, his inventory expanded.  As the retail store operations grew, the company maintained its believes in fresh dairy, and in other fresh products.  Everything is fresh, and as close to homemade as possible.  As a matter of fact, the retail store has been featured in publications around the world, such as the Guinness Book of Records, Food Network, People Magazine, and the New York Times.

Expanding in to Gift Baskets

During the course of the store's expansion, Stew Leonards has expanded into the gift basket division business.  They also sell fruit baskets as well.  Their inventory of fruit baskets includes fresh fruit baskets, and the store also sells fruit baskets with towers.  Their fruit baskets are unique, in that they include fresh cheeses that are encased in simple country like baskets decorated with ribbons.  The packaging speaks of the country fresh produce, and the fresh from the market products that the store sells.  The gift basket towers are filled with delicious, rich, homemade treat such as brownies, nuts, and a variety of candies.  Pastry lovers will enjoy receiving fresh pasty gift baskets and tins.  They will enjoy fresh Brownies, and Blondie buckets.  These are topped with nuts, as well as milk chocolate, and white chocolate drizzle.  Also available for purchase are homey cakes like grandma used to make.  The cake flavors include Granny Smith apple cake, blueberry cake, as well as cookie packages that are filled with fresh, delicious homemade cookies.
