Simon Citrus Farm History and Overview
A Hobby and a Business
Believe it or not, the Simon Citrus Farm began as nothing but a hobby for growing Mandarin oranges. Although it began for a simple pass time, is actually ended up as a full-blown orchard. They specialize in growing the “Brown Select” variety of Mandarin oranges for two reasons: the fruit gets ripe a bit faster than the other varieties and it’s also much sweeter than some of the other versions as well. Ripening quickly helps the Simon Citrus Farm to grow more for their customers.
The “Brown Select” variety of Mandarin oranges belongs to the Satsuma group of oranges. There are actually four groups; Satsuma, King, Mediterranean and the common groups. Given the name, it is not hard to guess that Mandarin oranges did not originate in the United States. Although the Simon Citrus Farm grows them, they did not introduce them here. They were actually introduced first into the US by a gentleman named George Hall back in 1876. He planted them in Florida. Since then, millions have been imported from Japan.

The Louisiana Orange
Generally, citrus is grown in the south east because of the citrus friendly climate. The Simon Citrus Farm has been able to experience success with their crops even in their location in Louisiana as well. It takes much time and work to produce these fruits. Originally it took anywhere from five to seven years for a planted crop to start turning out actual fruit. This is of course if the crop was planted with seeds as opposed to transported trees. Budded trees, on the other hand, can actually begin to produce Mandarin oranges closer to three or four years from planting. The Simon Citrus Farm has it down to a science now.
The Louisiana Mandarin oranges from the Satsuma group have their own appeal for people, apart from the many other varieties of oranges. They are the size of a small fist and taste very, very sweet. Something fun to know about this Louisiana orange from the Simon Citrus Farm is that it is easy to peel and contains no seeds. One can eat it in easy-to-make segments which make it a fast, delicious snack on the go. At this point, the Simon Citrus Farm sells their lushes fruits in bushels. Hopefully at some point in the future, the Simon Citrus Farm will extend their product line to include fresh fruit gift baskets containing these enchanting fruits as well.
