Harry and David History and Overview
Harry and David pioneered fruit gift basket giving by mail and ships more fruit gift baskets than all of the other U.S. fruit basket companies combined. They have an unmatched business gifting division with corporate branding and is the only one we could find that is committed to business practices that are environmentally responsible and sustainable.
Harry and David had its beginnings just after the turn of the 20th Century by Samuel Rosenberg, father of Harry and David. Samuel was a successful hotel owner in Seattle, Washington, but his true love was agriculture. In 1910 he traded the luxurious Hotel Sorrento for 240 prime acres of pears in Southern Oregon's Rogue River Valley and named them Bear Creek Orchards.
Sam passed away four years later in 1914, and his two sons, Harry and David, took over the family orchard business. The brothers studied agriculture at Cornell University and Harry and David decided early on to specialize in the Comice pear for which there was a good export market to the grand hotels and restaurants of Europe. The Rogue Valley proved even better suited to Comice pears than its birthplace in France. Harry & David named their luxurious pears "Royal Riviera" to set them apart from varieties grown elsewhere. Throughout the Roaring 20's, the fame of Royal Riviera pears spread, and business boomed.
Then came the Crash and Great Depression and Harry and David's affluent market vanished. There was no question that the Royal Riviera pears were unsurpassed in quality, but how would Harry and David find new buyers?
Always innovating, the brothers came up with the idea of selling their pears by mail. In 1934, they made their famous sales trips to San Francisco and New York to visit the captains of industry and pitch their Comice pears as ideal business gifts. Soon orders were rolling in. It was the beginning of Harry and David as America's premier direct marketer of fruit and gift baskets. They are one of the nation's oldest catalog mail order companies. Innovation and bold marketing defined the company's early periods of growth.
Harry and David Fruit of the Month Club
In 1938, Harry and David came up with the idea of the Fruit of the Month Club, which allows customers to automatically send or receive fruit gifts throughout the year. The Fruit of the Month gift has proven to be one of their most popular gifts and competitors have come up with versions of their own Fruit of the Month. The Tower of Treats, introduced in 1947, is a fruit tower that provides holiday cheer to thousands of American families each year. These fruit towers and other Harry and David innovations, like the fruit of the month club, have been widely imitated.
Today, Harry and David continue to grow and plan for the future and develop new ways to capitalize on Harry & David's brands and our reputation for unmatched quality and customer service. Unique to Harry and David is the fact that they pack their own edible fruit baskets and fruit gift towers, grow their own pears, make their own chocolates, as well as make many of their own candies, cookies and chocolates.
Pack Baskets In-House
Harry and David design their own baskets in-house. Their own employees decorate each gift basket and ship them in sturdy containers which they also have come up with as a company. It’s what they call the Harry and David difference. Also, rather than outsourcing their packaging, they pack their own unique baskets in-house, by hand.
Personal Touch
The in-house packing ensures the highest possible quality as well as a personal touch. Their fruit is either grown in their own orchard, or carefully selected to ensure the highest quality. If the item you chose is not available or does not meet the high quality standard, Harry and David will substitute items that are only of equal or a greater value.
Grow Fruit
Southern Oregon is where Harry and David started packing and shipping fruit over 70 years ago. They have honed and refined their passion for growing delicious fruits throughout the decades with their exclusive pears. This company grows these pears in their beautiful orchards in Southern Oregon.
Make Chocolate
Believe it or not, Harry and David make their own chocolates as well. It seemed the only way to guarantee the best chocolate and secure their customer’s pleasure and passion with each bite. Blending and tempering the chocolate in their own confectionary with perfect consistence and a flawless finish has set the Harry and David chocolate above and beyond many of their competitors.
Bake Cakes
They also bake their own cakes and cookies. It’s true. With private recipes that include sweet butter, fresh nuts and fresh fruit, Harry and David makes small batches with a home-style quality. It is this that makes the difference as people really do notice it. The Harry and David Company also build their own gift towers from ground up. Fruits, chocolates, ribbons, packaging, you name it. This is what makes every gift tower from Harry and David both unique and special.
Strongest Guarantee
The company of Harry and David boasts the strongest guarantee in the business. Not only will both you and your recipient be satisfied, you both must be delighted. Otherwise, they will send an appropriate replacement or a full refund; either way, it’s your choice. Everything is guaranteed. There is no other way around it. No questions or excuses.
