Zesty citrus fruits grace this straight-from-Florida basket with unique Hale Groves gourmet items like orange blossom honey and orange marmalade. The basket was a little on the small side but Hale Groves offers a chance to upsize the basket (for a $150 price tag). The little basket was tightly-packed with a couple of pink grapefruit and five oranges. The gourmet items were actually pretty good, especially their toffee almonds. The basket itself was sturdy and came with a nice dark-green ribbon.

Two Navel Oranges, Three Tangelos and Two Ruby Red Grapefruit - The navel oranges were not the dark orange, thick-skinned, flavorless lot you find in the grocery store. Hale Groves' oranges were sweet and juicy, even though the skin wasn't as picture perfect. The tangelos peeled easily and were delicate, so delicate one got a little beat up on the trip from Florida. The Ruby Red Grapefruit had a bight yellow skin and soft peach colored flesh. It was a little bitter but overall sweet and juicy.

SWEET GOURMET

 

Orange Inspiration - This is the only basket we received that had honey in it and some honey it was. Bees get their nectar from orange blossoms to make this honey which means there is a slight citrus hint. It was wonderful honey. Hale Grove Orange Marmalade was fabulous, not too bitter and very zesty. The Honeybell Orange Zest Cake from Dockside Cakes was very moist and sweet. It was really sticky and didn't come cleanly out of the mini plastic bundt pan. Our favorite ingredient in the cake? "honeybell tangelo emulsion". Wow. I'll don't think I'll be seeing that on grocery store shelves any time soon. However, the chocolate orange in the basket, is like the ones you see in the store.

Choco-holics Delight - Let me first applaud Hale Groves for including the Lake Champlain chocolate coins. There were only four but each one was a piece straight from heaven. Their tin had an impressive variety of chocolate covered goodies. If you had read any of my reviews on the subject of brightly colored "chocolate" covered confections you know I am not a fan because I think they taste waxy and fake. Seeing as they are popular I would be doing you a disservice if I didn't let you know Hale Groves at least moved beyond only bright red bing cherries and included caramels, blueberries and strawberries - even though I'd rather have double the Lake Champlain Chocolates instead. So, they were good if you like that style of candy. The little gold box of chocolate truffles were delightful and in perfect condition.

SAVORY GOURMET

 

Nuts - Really. That was the only "savory" gourmet item. Tons of sweet items but only one non-sweet. Almonds, cashews, pecans, walnuts, Brazil nuts, filberts (aka hazelnuts). It was a nice mix, roasted and diverse - we wish there were more in the bag and a little less salt.

A Category All Its Own - The chocolate toffee pecans were outrageously good. I planned on saving some for my boss. Nope. They never made it to him. Little chucks of toffee and pecans all suspended in a creamy ball of chocolate that has been rolled in powdered sugar (sigh). Blissful, naughty little candies and they give you a pretty generous bag too. Lucky for my tastebuds, unlucky for my waistline.

The history of Hale Groves began in 1939, when a student at Georgia Tech visited Vero Beach, Florida during spring break.  This student met an elderly man, while exploring the small, but beautiful town of Vero Beach.  The elderly man had moved down South from New Jersey, because of poor health, and started his own fruit shipping business.  The elderly man gave the young student a tour of his packing house and gave the boy samples of his fresh, just picked, ripened fruit.  The Georgia Tech student was astounded, because he had never tasted such sweet and juicy fruit before.  Bewildered by the high quality of the fruit, the student soon discovered the secret to such scrumptious fruit.  Vero Beach resides in the heart of the Indian River Citrus Belt, renown for growing the best tasting Florida oranges and grapefruit.  This student was so inspired by his visit that he would found his very own fruit shipping business.  This student's name was Steve Hale, Jr.

When Steve Hale graduated in 1940 with a mechanical engineering degree and a commission in the U.S. Naval Reserve, he volunteered for active duty.  Once he completed his service in 1946, he went to Vero Beach with his wife, Polly, and two kids.  Here they began their fruit business by renting a small fruit stand located along the side of U.S. Highway #1.  They used their home as their office and the shed behind the house for packing fruit.

At first, their mailing list was made up of friends and relatives.  But, as time went on, the list grew from customers shopping at their fruit stand.  Many customers brought fruit home and ordered fruit baskets to be shipped to relatives and friends up North.  In turn, many of those recipients who received the fruit baskets added new names to the mailing list also.

Steve was responsible for picking the fruit, packing it in the shed, and trucking it to the Railway Express Station, while Polly was responsible for manning the phone, answering questions, and taking orders.  Steve and Polly both would write the gift cards and type the shipping labels.
