Ruma's Review

Ruma's unwritten policy of "more stuff than stuffing" rings true in their gigantic Deluxe Gourmet Basket. This basket was heavy on the fruit and chocolate and had some crowd-pleasers like sparkling cider and giant pineapple. The quality of the fruit was so-so, but the actual little willow basket it came in was beautiful. The fruit basket was wrapped the basket in yellow cellophane that made it look kind of tacky.

FRUIT

 

Twelve Apples - Four Gala , four Red Delcious, four Granny Smith.  This basket had a dozen apples! More apples than any other basket we reviewed. To be honest, the quality of the apples was about the quality you get at a grocery store. Some of the apples were a little mealy and a few of them were bruised or punctured.

Four Navel Oranges & Four Ruby Red Grapefruit - Thick skins and reasonably sweet fruit, the Navels were as good as any navels you can likely buy locally.  The Ruby Red grapefruit was juicy and sweet with pale pink flesh and not too bitter.

Five D'Anjou Pears - Pears are really hard to ship sometimes because they are very fragile and they get super ugly, super fast. People who ship pears have to do some experimenting to find out what works; many of the decide to ship them when they are very firm and underripe. Although Ruma's pears were super firm when they got here they were super gashed. We aren't sure what happened to them on the way over here but they weren't looking too happy when they came our way.

One Big Delicious Pineapple - A pineapple in a fruit basket just screams fun. We aren't sure if it's the pokey leaves at the top that look like hair or the sweet, fragrant, bright yellow flesh but Ruma's scored big with us when we say they included a pineapple in their basket. It was tasty. It was fun.

SWEET GOURMET

 

Chocolate Lover's Dream - Ruma's basket included four main options for chocolate overdose - Lindt, Ferrero, Toblerone and a box of chocolates that didn't have a name - the white one with raspberry filling was very cheesecakey good. Yes, you can pick up the Toblerone, Lindt and Ferrero at a store but the quantity of chocolate was pretty impressive. The hot cocoa packet was the only thing that seemed out of place, since the packet was kind of beat up and there was only one. Not sure if someone just threw that in for good measure.

Fruit Inspired Sweets - The Cambridge and Thames hard candies were actually tolerable, unlike most hard candy. They had powdered sugar sprinkled on them and came in a cute little tin. The Knudsen's sparkling cider was sweet and bubbly and made from real apples (some apple ciders are white grape juice but flavored like apples - weird, huh?). The orange marmalade was pretty standard.

SAVORY GOURMET

 

Cheese and Crackers - Ruma's included Dolfino Gouda cheese in their basket. REAL gouda, not the pasteurized "cheese food" products flavored like gouda. It was very robust. The crackers came in a big red box and were kind of like big seasoned Ritz crackers.

Nearly 110 years ago, Ruma's Fruit was started by a Sicilian immigrant, a handcart and a dream. With hard work and dedication, this handcart owner was able to sell fruits and vegetables to the locals and provide for his family. This man was named Giacomo Ruma.
