Red Envelope Review

The Cheers Basket is a picnic waiting to happen. Cherry Moon Farms delivers "Cheers" with standard, trusted fruit basket items - apples, pears, oranges, cheese, nuts, chocolate and cider. We applaud the diversity of the products and yet, hope to see some more creative daring items in the future. The fruit was fresh but the gourmet items were a little uninspiring.

FRUIT

 

Four Apples - Two Granny Smith apples and two Fuji apples. Three of the four apples were in good shape but one was dented from shipping. The flavor of the apples wasn't much different than what you would get in a supermarket. I personally like Fugi apples better than Red Delicious because I find Red Delicious are more hit and miss as far as quality (and more often miss than hit).

Two Navel Oranges - Good solid navel orange. Not to dry and sweet all the way through.  Easy to peel and a beautiful bright orange peel.

Four Pears - Two Bosc pears and two D'Anjou pears. The pears were actually in good shape. It's pretty hard to ship pears without bruising them so fruit companies ship them when they are pretty hard. These pears came just fine and the flavor was the same quality taste you would find at a supermarket but better preserved appearance.

SWEET GOURMET

 

Classic Basket  - Red Envelope ships Cherry Moon Farm's "Cheers!" basket so if you have already read the review for Cherry Moon Farms this wont be anything new. Like most of the other big fruit basket companies (The Fruit Company, Harry and David, Gourmet Gift Baskets and Golden State Fruit) include chocolate covered cherries and/or chocolate covered nuts. This basket had both chocolate covered cherries and chocolate covered almonds. Two unique items they include are the Gigi Baking Company's Lemon Biscotti Bites. These were pretty tasty. Overall, nothing really daring, just all around solid sweets and thankfully NO HARD CANDY - the cheap filler "sweet" item. Everything was good quality and reasonable quantity.

Holy Delicious Graham Cracker - The favorite sweet of the basket by far was the chocolate covered graham crackers. I wasn't expecting much from a chocolate covered graham cracker but the chocolate they used to cover it was divine. The box said it was a "hand-made old fashioned graham cracker" that was "dipped in premium European chocolate" and, after eating it, I believe them. I only wish there were more than two of them in the box.

SAVORY GOURMET

 

Unique Cheese - Red Envelope's fruit basket included two eight ounce cheeses from Glacier Ridge Farms: Roasted Garlic and Gouda. Both cheeses were tasty, though the gouda is not real Gouda, but in their words a "pasteurized process cheese food gouda-type flavor". My guess is that its much cheaper to make gouda-flavor than true gouda. The taste difference wasn't too drastic from real gouda but a bit of a bummer. This basket is meant to be accessible to many people so the cheese isn't super sharp or so garlicky it singes your nose hair. Just nice, compatible flavors. The water crackers were surprisingly good too. Many water crackers are something like hard tack and a round saltine. The Elki brand of water crackers seemed flakier and more flavorful than some of the others we reviewed.

Two Kinds of Nuts - Salted cashews and pistachios were included in Red Envelope's basket from Cherry Moon Farms. They were fresh and tasty, not to dry nor too oily. Many baskets have some sort of mixed nuts in a bag or can, it was a nice change of scenery to have pistachios.
