Pemberton Farms Review

Massachusetts-based Pemberton Farms' Grand Cheer Extravaganza Basket was piled high with 22 pieces of fruit, including a fresh pineapple and the prettiest colored red D'Anjou pears you ever saw. The fruit quality was hit and miss - the citrus was pretty good, the apples were so-so but the most of the gourmet items were a bit uninspiring. Pemberton Farms has other baskets with cooler items than this one we may consider reviewing in the future but this was their recommendation when we ordered the basket.

FRUIT

 

Four Fuji, Three Red Delicious, Two Granny Smith - Usually bigger fruit baskets mean more of the fruit is bruised since there is more fruit exposed and gets beat up on the journey but Pemberton Farms did a good job keeping the fruit in nice condition. None of the apples were bruised and reflected the same quality you'd find in a good grocery store.

South African & Floridian Oranges & Ruby Red Grapefruit - Pemberton Farms' basket included an orange I'd never seen before - South African Midnight. These were very juicy and had no seeds - very nice orange. The "Florida Glo" is a cross between a Tangelo and a Temple Orange so, although it's a tangerine it's more sweet than tart. A very easy peel fruit, it was also quite good. The grapefruit was, meh. A little dry but not awful.

Two Green D'Anou and Two Red D'Anjou Pears - Decent quality pears though not quite as juicy or sweet as ones we have had in some of the orchard direct providers. The red pears were huge and had the most beautiful coloring - a warm red-orange glow with yellow freckles.

Pineapple - If we have said it once, we have said it a thousand times - pineapples in a fruit basket are awesome. Getting a pineapple in a fruit basket feels festive, showy - like getting balloons. The pineapple was fragrant and fresh and in good shape when we received it.

SWEET GOURMET

 

Three Very Different Chocolate Companies and One Very Scottish Shortbread Product - Pemberton's chocolate choices in this basket were good, better and best. Florida Tropic (they make chocolate oranges) was, meh; Lake Champlain Organic Chocolate Squares were a little stale (see the photo) and the Lindt Lindor Truffles were perfection. The Walker's Shortbread was crumbly and buttery, as shortbread should be.

Fruit Sweets - The two jams in the basket came in cute little jars and were pretty middle of the road in terms of quality, nothing too fantastic or too horrible. The hard candy was, well, kind of tacky. It comes in a loud crinkly plastic baggie with a printed label referring to the third party who produced it with no effort to make the candy look more exciting or elegant.

SAVORY GOURMET

 

That's It. - Not a whole lot of savory gourmet in this basket. Just the mixed nuts and 50% of them are peanuts and the packaging didn't feel very fancy. If this were our basket maybe we'd swap out a couple of pieces of fruit for some cheese or crackers.
