Four Apples - We believe these were Honeycrisp apples. Whatever they were they were out of control delicious. The best apples of all the baskets we reviewed. Very intense flavor and perfect crispy texture you always wish you saw in every apple but rarely find. These apples will be remembered by whomever gets this basket.

Six Pears - Harry and David became experts in growing the Comice pear, so much in fact, that they renamed it. This basket included their "Royal Riviera" pears and seriously - it is delicious. Be sure you know that the pears are not ripe when they arrive. There are several good ways to ripen them, so be sure "check the neck" before you bite into them. Once they are ripe they are heaven on earth.

SWEET GOURMET

 

Caramel Popcorn - Tasty mix of crunchy caramel popcorn mixed with almonds and about a third of the mix is covered in milk chocolate. Not too complicated, not too exotic just addictive, salty/sweet party mix.

Waxy Cherries Revisited - Harry and David's Bing Cherry Chocolates are no different than the ones that come in the baskets of Cherry Moon Farms, The Fruit Company, Golden State Fruit etc. If you are a returning visitor or have read any of our reviews on this subject you know we aren't huge fans of the "chocolate" covered bing cherries, They are hard, waxy and leave a dark red residue in your mouth. To me, they just feel like a kidsy, "non-food" item.

SAVORY GOURMET

 

Good Cheese - We love when fruit baskets include real cheese, not a "pasteurized processed cheese food". Harry and David didn't skimp on the cheese. The Rogue Creamery Touvelle is handmade at a local creamery in Oregon and the Barber's 1833 English Farmhouse Cheddar is actually from England. I really applaud this since there are some companies we've reviewed that have some really lame "cheese food" rather than real cheese. The TouVelle is made from raw cow's milk and has a mild, sweet taste, though it is a cheddar. (TouVelle comes from the state park close by to the creamery). THe English cheddar was sharp and crumbly.

Oh Honey - The Honey Wheat Twist Pretzels were around the same quality of the honey twist pretzels in the grocery store but the Raspberry Honey Mustard Pretzel Dip was so uniquely good. I am not a person who likes dijon mustard so I was a little reticent to dive into something with whole mustard seeds but for some reason it didn't bother me. It was sweet and sticky. The pretzels taste great with it or you can spread it on sandwiches, meats etc. It's really quite good.

Salami - Harry and David's 8 ounce dry salami was covered in "herbes de provence" (thyme, sage, bay leaves, parsley, rosemary). The salami is typically served sliced with cheese and crackers but we found it was fun to dice it up and add it for flavor when cooking vegetables. The little log is covered in herbs, completely covered. It is really tough and salty, after all, it is dry salami.

Harry and David was established through the entrepreneurial spirits of two educated brothers following the death of their father. These brothers were named Harry and David, of course! Their father was a successful hotel owner who sold out of that industry to go into growing pears. When he died he left acres of orchard to the brothers who came up with an innovative idea to propel the business forward.

Rather than sticking with local sales to people in their residential area, the brothers decided to sell their fruits to restaurants, hotels and other businesses in their area as well as in other cities and eventually other states. They made quite a few successful decisions to keep their business alive through very trying economic times, including focusing on one specific type of pear that was more marketable to restaurants and hotels.

Over time Harry and David took their business to new limits by offering their fruits for delivery New York and other areas that weren't hit as hard by the Great Depression. This was when their business started to struggle and the brothers ventured out further and further from their orchards to sell their fruits.

Through their entrepreneurial spirits and never-give-up attitudes, Harry and David continued to prosper until the economy revived. They are now known as a leader in the fruit baskets and gift baskets industry.

The brothers studied agriculture at Cornell University and Harry and David decided early on to specialize in the Comice pear for which there was a good export market to the grand hotels and restaurants of Europe. The Rogue Valley proved even better suited to Comice pears than its birthplace in France. Harry & David named their luxurious pears "Royal Riviera" to set them apart from varieties grown elsewhere. Throughout the Roaring 20's, the fame of Royal Riviera pears spread, and business boomed.

Then came the Crash and Great Depression and Harry and David's affluent market vanished. There was no question that the Royal Riviera pears were unsurpassed in quality, but how would Harry and David find new buyers?
Always innovating, the brothers came up with the idea of selling their pears by mail. In 1934, they made their famous sales trips to San Francisco and New York to visit the captains of industry and pitch their Comice pears as ideal business gifts. Soon orders were rolling in. It was the beginning of Harry and David as America's premier direct marketer of fruit and gift baskets. They are one of the nation's oldest catalog mail order companies. Innovation and bold marketing defined the company's early periods of growth.

Harry and David Fruit of the Month Club

In 1938, Harry and David came up with the idea of the Fruit of the Month Club, which allows customers to automatically send or receive fruit gifts throughout the year.
