Two Navel Oranges, Three Tangelos and Two Ruby Red Grapefruit - The navel oranges were not the dark orange, thick-skinned, flavorless lot you find in the grocery store. Hale Groves' oranges were sweet and juicy, even though the skin wasn't as picture perfect. The tangelos peeled easily and were delicate, so delicate one got a little beat up on the trip from Florida. The Ruby Red Grapefruit had a bight yellow skin and soft peach colored flesh. It was a little bitter but overall sweet and juicy.

SWEET GOURMET

 

Orange Inspiration - This is the only basket we received that had honey in it and some honey it was. Bees get their nectar from orange blossoms to make this honey which means there is a slight citrus hint. It was wonderful honey. Hale Grove Orange Marmalade was fabulous, not too bitter and very zesty. The Honeybell Orange Zest Cake from Dockside Cakes was very moist and sweet. It was really sticky and didn't come cleanly out of the mini plastic bundt pan. Our favorite ingredient in the cake? "honeybell tangelo emulsion". Wow. I'll don't think I'll be seeing that on grocery store shelves any time soon. However, the chocolate orange in the basket, is like the ones you see in the store.

Choco-holics Delight - Let me first applaud Hale Groves for including the Lake Champlain chocolate coins. There were only four but each one was a piece straight from heaven. Their tin had an impressive variety of chocolate covered goodies. If you had read any of my reviews on the subject of brightly colored "chocolate" covered confections you know I am not a fan because I think they taste waxy and fake. Seeing as they are popular I would be doing you a disservice if I didn't let you know Hale Groves at least moved beyond only bright red bing cherries and included caramels, blueberries and strawberries - even though I'd rather have double the Lake Champlain Chocolates instead. So, they were good if you like that style of candy. The little gold box of chocolate truffles were delightful and in perfect condition.

SAVORY GOURMET

 

Nuts - Really. That was the only "savory" gourmet item. Tons of sweet items but only one non-sweet. Almonds, cashews, pecans, walnuts, Brazil nuts, filberts (aka hazelnuts). It was a nice mix, roasted and diverse - we wish there were more in the bag and a little less salt.

A Category All Its Own - The chocolate toffee pecans were outrageously good. I planned on saving some for my boss. Nope. They never made it to him. Little chucks of toffee and pecans all suspended in a creamy ball of chocolate that has been rolled in powdered sugar (sigh). Blissful, naughty little candies and they give you a pretty generous bag too. Lucky for my tastebuds, unlucky for my waistline.

Hale Groves Fruit Basket Overview

Hale Groves ships fruit gifts from the heart of the famous Indian River Citrus Belt in Florida which has rich soil, an ample water supply, and moderate temperature. Since 1946, Hale Groves’ fruit baskets have contained the world’s sweetest, tree-ripened, oranges and grapefruit. Steve Hale started out serving fresh squeezed orange juice from a fruit stand on U.S. Highway # 1.

Many customers bought fruit to take home with them, and ordered baskets of fruit to be shipped to relatives and friends up across the country. From this small start, Hale Groves has grown rapidly with the guarantee of complete satisfaction for over a half a century.

It Started with a Dream

An older man with compromised health was the initiator in Steve Hale, Jr’s quest to start Hale Groves. This man showed Steve what he was able to accomplish, despite his many limitations. He was able to grow, package and ship out fruit baskets full of delicious oranges and grapefruits for his self-made business. The exquisite, mouth watering fruits that Steve tried while in the company of this old man convinced Steve that he too wanted to pursue that very same dream.

At the time, Mr. Hale was not able to start right away. He decided to finish his schooling at Georgia Tech, a good many miles from the place in Florida that had made such a profound impact on him. That place in Florida is known as Vero Beach in the Indian River citrus belt. It is very well known for producing those tasty Florida oranges we have all heard about. That is the place that the Hale Groves Company would eventually call home. Seven years later, Steve returned with his wife and children to start his dream.

During those seven years, Steve was commissioned in the U.S. Naval reserve. He volunteered for active duty which kept him from his recently realized dream. Fortunately, when the war ended, he was able to move to the citrus belt in Florida to begin Hale Groves.

A Combined Effort

Hale Groves started out in the home of Steve and his wife, Polly. She helped him to man the phones while she cared for their children. Together, the family would type up shipping labels, pick and package fruit in their small shed behind their house. It was a combined effort that ended up over a half a century later as a successful business known as Hale Groves.

A Dream Realized

Without the unending support of his wife, Polly, Steve Hale could not have managed to make Hale Groves into what it is today. The quality of Hale Groves is definitely due in part to their fantastic location on the citrus belt in Florida. The citrus belt provides them with the perfectly fertilized soil, more than enough water and the perfect climate for growing fruits of all kinds.
