Gourmet Gift Baskets Review

Gourmet Gift Basket's Bountiful Harvest Basket scores big in the variety and quantity department for gourmet items. This basket had some wonderful things like Marich's chocolate and The Kings Cupboard Creme Caramel. Their mixes of dried fruit and nuts caught us by surprise; the packing is kind of lame but the contents inside were actually really good. We hope Gourmet Gift Baskets will change their packaging to match their product. The fruit in the basket was kind of an afterthought, probably since gourmet items are what Gourmet Gift Baskets primarily sells.

FRUIT

 

Three Red Delicious and One Granny Smith Apple - Not the highest quality apples we've received. Although they were shiny and had a deep red color they were a little bruised and the taste wasn't superior.

Two Navel Oranges - Pretty standard Sunkist brand Navel oranges, though one had a soft spot on it that was ready to spoil. One thing to remember about Gourmet Gift Baskets is that their company makes all kinds of gift baskets but doesn't really specialize in the fruit aspect. This is evident when you look at the quantity and variety of their gourmet items in the basket - they are more impressive than the fruit they included.

Three Argentinian D'Anjou Pears - The pears came in good shape, not too many scrapes and no bruises. Though they were a little on the small side they were a little nicer than the kind you buy in the grocery store.

SWEET GOURMET

Sweets for the Win - Gourmet Gift Baskets included a great selection of sweet gourmet items. The best item, in our opinion, was the King's Cupboard Cream Caramel - it was divine and perfect to disguise the kind of mediocre apples and pears. Other winners included Marich's Chocolate Covered Cherries, the only non-waxy/nasty/crayon-like chocolate covered cherries we've encountered. They are soft and melt easily in your mouth. The Marich Holland Mints were good too, with a light minty center. We liked the Brent and Sam's Chewy Chocolate Chunk Cookie but the website said "chocolate chip cookies" - it was just one cookie, so, kind of false advertising.

Mixing Things Up A Bit - Gourmet Gift baskets had a good amount of mixes in this basket - a sweet granola that was little sticky, mixed dried fruit that included dried pears and peaches, trail mix and mixed nuts. Sadly the packaging wasn't as nice as the contents inside - something that doesn't happen often. The granola was really tasty and had golden raisins, pecans, dried cranberries, pepitas, dried blueberries.

We Be Jammin - The Stonewall Kitchen jams were excellent. They came in small little jars but had big flavor. The orange cranberry marmalade was tangy and warm. The Raspberry Peach Champagne jam had raspberry seeds, little peach chunks and champagne  - real champagne. Don't worry, all the alcohol has cooked out.

SAVORY GOURMET

Meats - We applaud Gourmet Gift Baskets efforts to include as much variety as they did. Most baskets don't even attempt meat because it is expensive. That is always exciting for the recipient to dig through their treasures. The summer sausage and smoked salmon gave the basket extra variety and yet, the quality was not as great. The salmon tasted like tuna canned tuna. The summer sausage was, well summer sausage - you either like it or you don't.

Cheese Fail -  Gourmet Gift Basket's website says the basket includes "sharp Vermont cheddar cheese" - this is false. At least it was in the basket we received.We had to take off points for the Northwoods Cheese Company "cheese food". It looks like real cheese but it isn't. It is a "pasteurized cheese food product". It's basically like the pasticky American cheese singles but flavored like a nice cheese like gouda. The crackers seemed to be of a little higher quality but the box they came in was kind of hokey and generic looking.

Mixed Nuts - A nice balance of cashews, almonds, pecans, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts and peanuts. Not too salty and roasted to that point where they leave a nice nutty aftertaste. We wish the packing was nicer to compliment the quality nuts they include in their basket.
