We were impressed to find things like baklava, expensive artisanal aged cheddar and dried pears in their basket. Three Fuji Apples - Sweet, crisp and full of flavor, Golden State Fruit's apples were some of the best apples we have ever tasted. This is a perfect example of the difference in quality from an orchard-direct company and all the other fruit basket companies. No stickers on the fruit, it was perfectly ripe and out of this world quality fruit.

Three Navel Oranges and Ten Honey Tangerines - Outstanding straight-from-the-tree quality. The honey tangerines were not sour, but more like clementines, easy to peel and very sweet. The navel oranges were much better quality than the kind you get at the grocery store. They have a more full, zesty flavor and then skin is not as thick.

Three Comice Pears - To die for juicy and full of flavor. These pears were obviously picked at their peak and shipped to us. The advantage of getting pears from Golden State Fruit or another orchard direct fruit company is that they aren't growing pears that are meant to sit on a shelf at the store for days. They are growing pears that are meant to taste better than what you can get in the store because you are paying more.

SWEET GOURMET

 

The Only Basket With Baklava - We give Golden State Fruit props for the baklava in the basket. The flaky layers dripped with honey and finely chopped nuts, it was a pleasure to eat it. The baklava made up for the Ghirardelli chocolate squares. Not that Ghirardelli is bad, we just see it in a lot of baskets and it's available in the every grocery store. We tend to tip our hats to fruit basket companies that try to offer something in their basket that is hard to find, unique or of especially high quality.  We frown on cheap, fake and/or ordinary items but especially items that appear to be awesome and are not.

Three Gourmet Takes on Fruit - Dried, chocolate-covered and preserved - all good. The Torn Ranch dried fruit came in a small bag but had good variety; pears, plums, apricots, peaches. It's not every day you get a dried pear. Chocolate covered cherries didn't seem very special since they are the same waxy, red dye no.5 type all the other fruit basket companies have (sorry, just being honest) but the jam, oh the jam. Earth and Vine's Apricot Pineapple Tangerine Jam was absolutely dreamy. It was not overly sweet (you know that corn syrup taste I'm talking about), filled with chunks of fruit and had a warm cinnamon/ginger undertone that made it irresistible. It also came in a nine ounce jar, not bad.

SAVORY GOURMET

 

Unbelievably Good Cheese - Both the Vella Cheese Monterey Jack and Fiscalini Aged Cheddar were fantastic cheeses. Strong robust flavor combined with a texture that was melty and warm. Upon further investigation we learned that both Vella Cheese and Fiscalini use local milk for their cheese and their farms are environmentally certified with renewable power on site. The price tag on most of their cheeses goes for about $15 - $30 per pound. Golden State Fruit picked responsible, successful local businesses to stock their fruit baskets.

Urban Oven - These crackers were thick and dense. These are not light, flaky crackers but substantial enough to dip into something like hummus or a cheese ball and it wont break. The olive oil flavor is a nice mild taste that compliments the sharp cheddar in the basket.
