GiftTree Fruit Basket Review

Gift Tree's actual basket was different than any we had ever received. It was a little wicker trunk with handles, like a little suitcase, very unique. Sadly, the fruit inside (all grown in the United States) was really beat up because it wasn't well protected and shipped ground versus overnight. The gourmet items were hit and miss. The basket had really high quality chocolate from Theo and handmade soft Cano cookies but then lame savory items like a hot pepper "cheese" and nuts with the shells.

FRUIT

 

Three Fuji apples, all a bit bruised. The creative packaging was cute but didn't preserve the structural integrity of the fruit.

The three navel oranges were very nice on the outside and came in decent shape but didn't have a juicy, sweet taste. Just pretty average.

"A picture is worth a thousand words" (so go look at the picture of the pears) these pears were beat up pretty badly. The little wicker suitcase looking basket it came in really marked up the skin of these pears. The quality of the fruit was hard to tell since they were a little mashed but overall it was grocery store quality.

SWEET GOURMET

 

Awesome Chocolate and Cider - No lie, the best orange flavored chocolate I have ever had. The mint chocolate bar had a very spearmint rather than peppermint kind of taste and was so very very good. This was very nice dark chocolate plus it was organic and fair trade, hard to find. Seriously, Theo chocolate goes for about $4 a bar. It was far and away the best item in the basket and one of the best chocolates of all the baskets. The Gavioni Green Apple Cider was tart and sweet. We were surprised to see the cider was really imported from Italy, not just given an Italian-sounding name. We were further surprised to read the ingredients: "grape juice sparkling mineral water, natural green apple flavoring" - shouldn't this be called sparking grape juice? At least they didn't add any sugar or corn syrup.

Marionberry and Cano Cookies - A "marionberry" is not the former Washington DC mayor but is a type of blackberry used in the Triple Berry Fruit Spread included in Gift Tree's Sweet Celebrations fruit basket. The spread was very tasty but tiny. There was enough jam for about two pieces of toast. Bummer. The Cano cookies came from a bakery in Vancouver Washington and were very soft and moist. Touted as "the perfect guilt-free cookie" it has ingredients like Shepherd's Grain flour and flax seeds which means you get your daily value of omega 3. It tasted like a soft flattened, oat muffin with apple cinnamon filing.

SAVORY GOURMET

 

Aw Nuts...and Cheese - Sadly, this basket was woefully lacking in cool gourmet items. Although we really liked the little wood bark basket the nuts came in, we know nuts with a shell took up way more space than if they sent a shelled mixed nuts, leaving less room for, well, more treats. The "Hot Pepper Cheese" was labeled as a "pasteurized process cheese food with jalapeno peppers", it tasted like a spicy version of those plastic-like slices of "cheese food" found in so many school lunches.

Crackers - Three and a half garlic rosemary crackers came in the small box in Gift Tree's basket. They had a decent flavor but the packaging/naming probably oversells these, basically saltine crackers (minus the salt) with rosemary sprinkled on them.
