FTD Fruit Basket Review
We were pleasantly surprised by the nice presentation of this basket since it is from a floral company. We soon discovered that the contents were hit and miss. The damaged pear was the biggest let down followed by the fake brie and nasty tasting jalapeno cheese straws. On the up side the basket had a nice nut assortment, Ghirardelli chocolate and Italian sausage.
The photo on the site is misleading because it has tiny flowers, blackberries and embellishments that didn't come in the box. The wicker basket was the same but the photo shows two pears and five apples but our basket had six apples and one pear.

FRUIT

Three Granny Smith Three Red Delicious - Six Apples - The apples in FTD's basket were the same kind of fruit you buy at a grocery store. The Red Delicious were a little woody and gamey. The Granny Smith apples were tart and one was a little mealy. A couple of the apples had bruises or dents or were missing their stems. Not a huge deal but again, some fruit basket companies "do fruit" much better than others. FTD is a flower company, not a fruit company so the quality isn't the same as an orchard direct provider, which almost always have fabulous fruit since they pick it and ship it themselves.
Four Oranges - These were navel oranges with a sticker that said "USA Victor #3107". We did a little research to try and find the company's website or where the fruit was grown but had no luck. The oranges were hit and miss. Two oranges were fairly sweet and two were dry and bland.
The One Pear - Yeah, poor little D'Anjou pear was all beat up from the journey. You can see in the picture it was packed right in front and took some hard blows during shipping. Perhaps FTD shipped the pear after it started to ripen and was softer and less hearty for the trip. Whatever the reason we did take off points for the damaged pear. The flavor was just so so, not super sweet or rich.
SWEET GOURMET

Ghirardelli - You can see from the photo that the Ghirardelli Mint Chocolate bar was not just dark chocolate flavored like mint but actually had a gooey minty filling. We took a square and smashed it so you could see what we were talking about.
"English" Tea Cookies - Initially I thought Simply Indulgent Gourmet's English Tea Cookies with Cinnamon would be nice little shortbread cookies, light and flaky. They were actually more like small snicker doodles that were dense and hard. Perhaps I am just jaded by companies whose names have "indulgent" and "gourmet" in the title, as if they are try to convince us before we try it to trust them. I think the name oversells the product.
SAVORY GOURMET

Cheesy Items: Faux Brie, Cheese "Straws" and Sonoma Jacks - This was a first for me: "Brie flavored (italicize) Pasteurized Cheese Spread". Flavored? Yep. It basically Cheese Whiz in a little plastic dish that is flavored like brie. Doesn't even need to be refrigerated, kind of sad. The"Good Gourmet" cheese straws were absolutely horrible. I wont mince words, they tasted like spicy kitty treats. Dry and mealy they had a bad texture and a worse flavor. Maybe FTD will swap them out as a result of this review. The Sonoma Jacks cheese was another pasteurized cheese that was very soft and spreadable but came in foil-wrapped wedges. The photo on FTD website shows garlic flavored cheese but the kind we received was original so we assume the flavor varies from basket to basket.
Nunes Nuts - The Share the Health basket from FTD had two kinds of nut items from Nunes Farms: Roasted Almonds with Sea Salt and Roasted Salted Mixed Nuts. They were both fabulous. The mixed nuts were not too salty and had some very high quality nuts - just look at the photo. The packaging matched the product. We were pleasantly surprised to find whole pecans, cashews and almonds in very good condition and flavorful.
Dry Sausage & Snack Mix - If you are a vegetarian you may not care that there is meat in FTD's basket but frankly (no pun intended) few fruit basket companies include any sort of meat. Columbus' eight ounce dry Italian sausage had a nice texture and flavor and the package tells us there is no gluten, MSG or trans fat. The packaging was pretty cool - an Old World map The snack mix on the other hand was kind of lame: sesame sticks, peanuts, pretzels, raisins, rice crackers and chocolate candy pieces. It wasn't necessarily bad but hard to call it "gourmet".
ABOUT FTD

FTD Fruit Basket Key Insider Information
Although FTD is known for their quality network of florists, FTD only offers 4 different gourmet fruit baskets and only one fruit tower. These fruit gift baskets are prepared by a fruit basket drop shipper in California and not by their florists. FTD fruit baskets are not available for same day shipping like fruit baskets from GiftTree. Fruit Basket Review strongly suggests buying fruit baskets directly from a fruit basket provider who specializes in fruit baskets who have a larger selection and not a florist based company like FTD.
Florists' Transworld Delivery, or better know as FTD, was founded in 1910 and is a network of approximately 20,000 retail florists in the United States and over 50,000 international florists in 154 countries around the world. FTD is proud to be able to deliver products to almost 100% of the U.S. population and gives all their deliveries with a Satisfaction Guarantee because their independent florists adhere to the highest service, standards and quality.
In 1910, 15 American retail florists agreed to exchange orders for deliveries that were out-of-town. First known as the "Florists' Telegraph Delivery", FTD was the world's first flowers-by-wire business model. 55 years later, FTD expanded to include transactions internationally. The name of the company was changed to "Florists Transworld Delivery" to better reflect the presence of their global enterprise. In 1914, FTD adopted the classic figure of Mercury as its official logo. The gold "Mercury Man" is recognized around the world and has become the floral industry's most recognized emblem of quality.
Contracting
The way that FTD runs its operations is to contract independent florists to get the jobs done. FTD is a marketer of floral arrangements and specialty gift baskets. While they sell them using their website and their telephone, they do not create these gifts themselves. Interestingly enough, this company is the world’s oldest floral services organization.
Contracting out their work to independent florists has worked out well for FTD’s business model. They ensure that these contracted agents commit to the highest standards of quality with their service. This remarkable company procures same-day delivery to almost the entire United States. With the variety of flower options available at FTD, they seem almost too good to be true.
A Variety to Choose From
Indeed, FTD can offer specialty gifts for every holiday or special event. If your occasion calls for a gift, you can feel certain that this fine company has something available for your needs. Because of the fact that FTD prides themselves on their artistic displays, reliable service and value if ingredients, they have made their way as one of the largest floral businesses in the world.
FTD has a huge network that includes about 16,000 contracted florists in the United States as well as about 45,000 other florists throughout 154 countries. Although this fine company contracts out many of its orders in the hope of being able to serve all who have a need, they have been able to keep their guarantee on all orders sent through FTD within both the United States and Canada. That’s an impressive promise given the fact that they outsource their gift baskets and flowers.
A Symbol of Quality
The Mercury figure was made the logo of that’s an impressive promise, which has since become one of the most recognized logos throughout the entire world. This was issued in 1914, just four years after the founding of FTD. The origination of FTD is an interesting story. Fifteen American retail store owners of flower arrangements came together to agree to help each other with out-of-town deliveries. It took a mere five years to expand into an international presence that brought international florists together in the spirit of mutual benefit. No doubt this impressive business model will continue on for decades.
