Nearly 22 pounds of fresh oranges, grapefruit and tangerines this basket proves a winner for citrus lovers. This is, by far, the largest citrus "basket" available. It's hard to call it a basket since the fruit comes in a giant red wooden drum that looks like something off the set of Babes in Toyland. Cushman's is a branch of Harry and David, so some gourmet items were similar to the Harry and David Basket we reviewed but most items had a special citrus twist. We recommend this for a family gift due to the massive amount of fruit inside would be far too much for one person to consume before it spoils.

FRUIT

 

Oranges - All the citrus fruit was sweet and juicy and tasted better than it looked. Sadly, most people choose fruit for its color and/or size but those two factors don't really determine how flavorful the fruit will be. Don't hate on this Cushman's oranges because they are a little more yellow than orange, the flavor is very good.

Grapefruit and Tangerine - I need to figure out what kid of tangerine or small orange they put int his basket. The ruby red grapefruit were very juicy and not as bitter as store-bough grapefruit. I should know because I don't like store-bought grapefruit. The grapefruit were beat up a little bit since they were packed so tightly in the drum but the fruit wasn't badly damaged.

SWEET GOURMET

 

Chocolate Goodies - Cushman's Holiday drum included a box of six chocolate truffles and a bag of Harry and David's Milk Chocolate Mini Mints. "Mini" is a little bit of a misnomer since the mints aren't tiny like Altoids but really pieces of chocolate the size of an ice cube. The inside is smooth chocolate like a truffle with mint undertones. The truffles all had different flavors: dark cherry, raspberry, almond, dark chocolate, white coffee and almond. If you are a truffle person you can actually go to Harry and David's website and order the truffles by themselves as well.

Fruit Sweets - Since they are known for their Honeybell oranges they included a lot of Honeybell-esque sweets like mini cookies, marmalade and Honeybell candy in the shape of tiny orange wedges. They also included two small jars of strawberry preserve with chunks of real strawberries inside. The Honeybell cookies were small and the texture of Chips Ahoy or shortbread. They had a tangy citrus flavor and were the size of a quarter. The honeybell candy had a nice flavor and was fresh as far as hard candy goes.

SAVORY GOURMET

 

Mixing it Up - The Honeybell Pecan Trail Mix and Dark Chocolate Moose Munch could also go in the sweet section but we're classifying it as "savory" because there were nuts in both of them. The trail mix had the most fabulous pecans that were encrusted with a sweet buttery tangelo topping. It included raisins, pumpkin seeds, cashews, almonds and cranberries and a little salt, but not overpowering.  The Moose Munch was a caramel covered mixture of popcorn, almonds and cashews with some pieces smothered in dark chocolate. Harry and David's Moose Much is crunchy and sweet.

His Cushman's Fruit retail location offered juicy oranges and grapefruits that were packed up and shipped off to friends and families of the vacationing tourists. His delectable fruits were greatly appreciated by all who visited his quaint little fruit shop.

As a result of those who enjoyed Cushman's Fruit and the gifts that were sent, Ed began to acquire more and more repeat customers. The secret to a lasting business is repeat customers. This business has lasted the test of 60 years which means he’s had a repeat order here or there. Luckily, this family legacy was able to be taken over by Ed’s son, Allen.
