Capalbo's Gift Baskets

CEO Fruit Gift Basket

Capalbo's Gift Baskets Review

This tall basket had 14 pieces of fruit and some very unique European gourmet items. Capalbo's Gift Baskets' Italian roots are evident in their items like Torino Classical Breadsticks and Tonon biscotti cookies; many gourmet items in their CEO basket were imported from Italy or have Italian or European roots. The fruit in the basket was reasonably fresh but doesn't compete with the quality of orchard direct fruit (fruit basket companies who grow their own fruit). Capalbo's CEO Fruit Gift Basket had some out-of-this-world Belgian truffles but the most of the gourmet items were ho-hum in regards to quality. While the basket was tall and showy and included a bright red satin bow, clear scotch tape was wrapped around the baskets contents to keep them in place so we took off some points for overall presentation.

FRUIT

Capalbo's Fruit Basket Fruit Variety

Three Red Delicious and Two Granny Smith - Yup, more garden variety fruit. It's hard to say your fruit will be bad or good, since I have found, especially with Red Delicious, you can get a waxy, woody apple or one that is worth eating al the way to the core. The grannies in the basket were tart, firm, the kind you chop up and put in a pie. Capalbo's apples were in decent physical shape, no real bruises, dents or other blemishes to speak of but not the kind of apples that make you want to sing. Okay, there aren't many apples out there like that.

Three Navel Oranges and a Grapefruit - If I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times - the fruit in this basket is the same kind of stuff you find in a grocery store. Since Capalbo's doesn't grow their own fruit they have to get it from a supplier. Chances are, the are using the same supplier that your local grocery store uses, or at least  a similar one. I have to be honest, one of the three oranges began to mold within about 36 hours of receiving the basket but cosmetically, I didn't see it when I opened it.

Three D'Anjou and Two Bosc Pears - Capalbo's pears were not bruised or blemished. One of the Bosc pears was missing its stem. We have seen this before in other baskets, so we can't criticize Capalbo's too much; it just generally makes the pear look sad, especially since Bosc pears have really cool stems. To see a pear without a stem is like seeing a mouse without a tail. The tail isn't necessary, it just looks kind of...crestfallen. The flavor of the D'Anjou pears was sweet and juicy when they ripened and the Bosc pears were fairly bland; as most Bosc pears are.

SWEET GOURMET

Capalbo's Fruit Basket Sweet Gourmet

Melty Melterson - Capalbo's CEO basket had two types of chocolate: Fielding Chocolat Classique Belgian Truffles and Ghiradelli's Luxe Milk Chocolate with Hazelnut. My favorite was, hands down, the Belgian Truffles. They were absolutely perfect. Dark and rich, they simply evaporate in your mouth. Ghirardelli is a pretty good stand by since they don't use things like high fructose corn syrup in their chocolate bars.

Dissapointing Dankek -  There was a chocolate cake from Ulker, a Turkish company. Maybe it just felt strange to eat cake out of plastic metallic bag but the quality of this cake shouldn't be expected to taste like cake you make at home. The cake has to ship well so the texture its firmer than normal cake. The cake also has to have a longer shelf life so they have added things to preserve it. It tasted saltier and less sweet than your average chocolate cake. To Capalbo's credit, the cake was in decent shape which is saying a lot considering the fact that it is a shipped gift.

Lady Fingers and "Luxury Wafers" - As far as lady fingers go, these are pretty standard; dry, bland, flaky and sugar topped. Torino includes a Lady Fingers recipe on the packaging so you can upcycle them. The Royal Dansk Luxury Wafers were in tact and again, pretty run of the mill "good".  They didn't stand out as being bad or fabulous but we did laugh at the name "luxury" wafer. We felt like we had to eat them reclined in an italian leather chaise or in the back of a Rolls Royce or something.

SAVORY GOURMET

Capalbo's Fruit Basket Savory Gourmet

Muen-STAR -  Capalbo's CEO Basket was the only basket we reviewed with Muenster cheese, REAL muenster, not some sort of Muenster flavored (italicize) cheese product. It was a mild flavor and good consistency.  It went well with the Monet Water Crackers which have almost no flavor whatsoever (I wonder if that is why they are called water (italicize) crackers?).  The breadsticks included are not the kind of breadsticks you get at a pizza joint, they are more like a long skinny, unsalted, saltine cracker. This seems to be sort of an upper East Coast thing, so people from out west or small cities (like me) don't see these very often - you New Yorkers probably see them all of the time.

Salty Nut Mix - Almonds, cashews, Brazil nuts, hazelnuts came in Capalbo's nut mix. As a matter of fact, there were no peanuts in the mix, which is kind of nice, since peanuts tend to be the pigeons of the nut world, meaning common and undesirable. As you can see from the photo, they were pretty darn salty. Which may be a good thing, if you are all about the salt. - Almonds, cashews, Brazil nuts, hazelnuts came in Capalbo's nut mix. Capalbo's Fruit Baskets

Capalbo's Fruit Basket History and Overview

A Long Tradition

Since its beginnings in 1906, Capalbo’s Fruit has been in business for over 102 years. The success of this business is no doubt the absolute product of continuing the fundamentals that were set by Rose and Domenick Capalbo all that time ago. Rose and Domenick both focused on continually adjusting to the customers’ ever changing requests and working every day as it if was their last on Capalbo’s Fruit Company.

Neither Rose nor Domenick had much education to speak of. Back in those days, running a business like Capalbo’s Fruit Company was nothing like it is today. No phones were ringing, no computer programs to continually run on, and no internet sales. For the Capalbo’s Fruit Company, they did not even have a retail location to start. They started out selling their produce door to door with handpicked selections that were chosen just hours before they were sold.

The First Store

Needless to say, selling their delicious fruits door to door worked out for them. They were eventually able to open a retail location for Capalbo’s Fruit which is even open today. The next step involved Frank, their son. Frank realized that he could secure better prices on purchasing the fruits if they bought in bulk quantities. Of course, it is difficult for such a small company like Capalbo’s Fruit was at that time to buy in bulk. So Frank arranged with local produce operations to buy with buying cooperatives.

At this point, they had lowered expenses which meant they could sell their products for less. Paying attention to their spending habits paid off for Capalbo’s Fruit Company in the long run. Quality always was considered to be the first priority followed immediately with procuring reasonably priced supplies that could be sold for less. Capalbo’s Fruit has benefitted from this technique for years.

Enter The Fruit Basket

At this point, fruit baskets had not yet been tried for Capalbo’s Fruit Company. Frank and his wife introduced fruit baskets to the brand, which proved to be incredibly popular. Capalbo’s Fruit Company grew and grew. Their staffing needs are ever increasing, especially around the holidays which are the busiest time for Capalbo’s Fruit Company.

Capalbo’s Fruit Company has kept up with the changing business market as well. They have introduced a full color catalog with several images of beautiful fruit gift baskets for purchase. They have also jumped on the internet wagon to secure even easier ordering and tracking abilities for their beloved customers.

A Long Time Coming

This Capalbo’s Fruit Company and its owners are indeed proud to have made it where it has and claim it was not luck that has brought them to this point. Hard work, quality, heeding customer comments and creating value have proved to be the reason for success for Capalbo’s Fruit Company.
