1800flowers Review

All the items on the photo from 1800Flowers website for their "Farmstead Finest Deluxe" basket were in the basket as promised. The quality and taste of those items? Debatable.  Their description promises "bite after amazing bite" but there were some items (namely the chili citrus snack twists) that were so, shall we say, unsavory, we didn't even finish them.  Their sweet gourmet items were mostly just hard candy, with the exception of the peanut brittle.  To sum up, we don't recommend this basket for the $99.99 price tag, too many corners were cut to drop that kind of money on this fruit basket.

FRUIT

 

Four  Apples - Two granny smith apples and two red delicious. Nothing to write home about. These apples were no different than what you can pick up in a supermarket. One was super crunchy because it was a little under ripe but that is much better than over ripe.     

Two Oranges - Again, these oranges weren't anything special, afterall, this is 1800Flowers, so they aren't growing their own fruit. They do what's call "drop ship" their baskets or in other words, have other people grow the fruit, use different vendors for the gourmet items and another set of people who pack the actual basket. To their credit, they do know how to ship things, so luckily none of the fruit was beat up and got here quickly.    

Three Pears - Three different pears actaully. We aren't sure if this is standard or we just got lucky but we received a bosc pear, a comice pear and a red anjou pear. The pears were so-so but the size of the "red" (a brownish/olive red color) anjou pear was crazy. We couldn't believe how big it was and the strange coloring on it. Check out the photo of it, it's pretty funky.

SWEET GOURMET

Well, If You Like Corn Syrup - Honestly, the sweet gourmet items were a total joke. The packaging and marketing promised something it did not deliver. Both the Perugina Capri and The Fruit Tree Raspberry Bon Bons looks like there could be a real treat inside - instead, you get plain old hard candy. It reminded me of something you'd find in a long-forgotten candy dish in the doctor's office.  The peanut brittle wasn't that bad but there wasn't a whole lot of it. The box mades it look like there was a lot in it. Tricky.

Bubbly - My favorite item by far was the Sonoma Sparkler Organic Apple (to quote their description) "handcrafted organic sparkling apple juice". Many fruit basket companies who send non-alcoholic sparkling drinks use Sonoma Sparkler's brand. I have always enjoyed the high quality of the drinks they make. 1800Flowers impressively delivered a their large glass bottle in tact and I applaud them for that. It can be risky sending glass in the mail but it made it here and was enjoyed after a couple hours of refrigeration. Very bubbly, sweet and tasty.

SAVORY GOURMET

 

Crackers Galore - There are five kinds of crackers in the CaPeachios variety pack. One was little like a graham cracker, the other like a Ritz but the other three were essentially water crackers. There was also a box of water crackers from The Fruit Tree. The crackers were bad it's just sad to see all the gourmet items are cheap fillers.   "Zangy" Chili Twists - These promised to be zesty and tangy. They were neither. Honestly, I was excited about the Emerson Dunne and Company Chili Citrus Snack Twists "Spicy Southwestern Style Cracker Snacks...zesty with a hint of tangy citrus" but they were horrible. I try to be positive and kind because I know how hard it is to run a business and we aren't out to destroy anyone's reputation but for real, these tasted like dog food and dish soap. The best tasting crackers were the Everything Flatbread Crackers, lots of little seeds and seasonings and a good texture.

"Kamembert" - Yes, I spelled it with a "k". Kinda like imitation crab is spelled "krab" since it isn't real (italicize) crab. This pasteurized cheese spread is deceptively packaged in a gold trim, hexagonal box and the name of the company? Marie Claude. You don't get much more generic French-sounding than names like Marie and Claude (except maybe, Jean-Pierre?). There isn't anything French about this cheese other than it's flavored (italicize) like camembert cheese.  It's from Melrose Park, Illinois and eh, doesn't actually need to be refrigerated.  It's Cheese-Whiz in a little plastic bowl. The only reason I get bent out of shape about this is because other fruit basket companies are actually spending the money for real, quality cheese and 1800Flowers is only appearing to have cheese in their baskets.
